The Parish of Blandford Environment Committee runs several programs throughout the year. We welcome anyone to help with the projects or find new ones for us to work together on. Anyone wishing to be part of the Environment Committee or just to have a chat call Claudia Zinck at 902-228-2091.
Planting Kits
Each spring we assemble “Planting kits” for the community. For the past two years, we have joined with the Hubbard’s Area Lions Club, giving every student at Shatford Memorial School a planting kit to take home on the Friday before April 22nd. There has been a pickup point in the village on Earth Day and the remainder going to the Community breakfast where all disappear. In 2024 we are returning to the Seasider meeting in April. For the first time, we are asked to participate in the Canexel Recycling Day in East River. We are preparing 250 planting kits on April 12th, at 1 PM. All are welcome to come help the largest planting kit project in the diocese of NS and PEI.
Recycling
The Parish also has a pen, marker, highlighters and mechanical pencil collection at several locations, including Covey’s Auto Salvage and the Community Center in Blandford. To date, we have collected over 5000 units out of landfills.
Community Gardens
The Parish works with the Board of Directors to coordinate the community gardens back of the Community Centre. We have obtained another grant to build one more waist-high box garden. These boxes are used by community groups and individuals. Last year the ARA grew pumpkins, the Board of Directors grew cucumbers to make pickles, Amy grew watermelons, the Blandford Bee Pathway planted bee friendly plants, and Claudia did a variety of things, zucchini being the most proficient.
