Weekly Reflection 6 July 2026

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:28-30

Summer arrives with a unique paradox. On one hand, it is traditionally viewed as a season of vacation, relaxation, and a slower pace of life. On the other hand, our modern calendars often fill

the long summer days with endless activities, travel plans, social gatherings, and a pressure to “make the most” of the warm weather. Before we know it, we can become just as exhausted by our leisure as we were by our labour.

Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11 is a beautiful antidote to this seasonal burnout. Notice that He does not say, “Go on a vacation and I will give you rest.” Vacations change our geography, but they cannot change the condition of a tired soul. Jesus invites us to *come to Him*.

The rest He offers is a soulful, deep-seated peace that is independent of our external circumstances. When He talks about taking His “yoke” upon us, He is referring to a tool used for two oxen to pull a load together. When we are yoked with Christ, He bears the heavy weight. We are no longer striving in our own strength. This summer, true renewal doesn’t come from checking out or unplugging from reality; it comes from leaning into the presence of God, letting Him set the pace of our days, and trusting that His grace is sufficient for all our responsibilities.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we confess that even in this season of summer, our mind is often racing and my soul feels hurried. I have chased after rest in worldly activities, only to find myself still drained. Today, we accept Your invitation to come to You. Take the heavy burdens of our worries, our expectations, and our endless to-do lists. Teach us how to walk at Your gentle pace. Refresh our weary heart with Your Holy Spirit and restore the joy of my salvation.
Amen.
